Thoroughbred Makeover Schedule

Overview of Events

PrelimRoundsThursday and Friday: Preliminary Rounds

Ten competitive disciplines are offered at the Makeover: barrels, competitive trail, dressage, eventing, field hunters, polo, ranch work, show hunters, show jumpers, and freestyle (a free-form division to demonstrate skills of the trainer’s choice). A horse may be entered in up to two disciplines.

Preliminary rounds take place on Thursday and Friday. (To see the specific tests required in each discipline, click here.) Each competitor receives a preliminary round score, and the top five in each discipline advance to the Finale.

Seminsars

 Thursday and Friday: Seminars

We offer several educational seminars and panel discussions dedicated to the care, training, and marketing of off-track Thoroughbreds.

VendorsThursday through Saturday: Vendor Fair

Dozens of companies, businesses and organizations take part in our Vendor Fair, held in the Covered Arena. You can shop for new gear, supplements and feed for your OTTB, and pick up some goodies for yourself as well!

SaleThursday through Sunday: Makeover Horse Sale

Many Makeover trainers take on off-track Thoroughbreds as resale projects, and the Makeover provides a unique opportunity for horse-shoppers to see dozens of OTTBs successfully competing in a second career, and all in one location.

RRP has endeavored to help market and facilitate the private sale of these horses by highlighting them at the competition — they wear special bridle numbers, are advertised on our website, and a printed sale catalogue is available to spectators. Designated areas are available for shoppers to try sale horses, and local veterinarians are on stand-by and available to perform pre-purchase exams on site.

About one-third of the horses competing in 2017 were available for sale. All sale contracts are private but are required to include no-slaughter and notification of resale restrictions.

StartingGateThumbFriday: Starting Gate College Consulting Team Competition

The team competition is a pilot program, allowing members of Pony Clubs, show stables, and collegiate and high school teams to collaborate in transitioning a horse off the track, under their coach or trainer's guidance. The team horses will be scored and placed separately from those in the main competition and are not eligible to compete in the Makeover Finale.

Teams must have a minimum of four members, with one designated as team captain, and each team can enter one horse. All participants can take part in retraining the horse. Two of the team riders will be submitted by the team captain to compete the horse at the Makeover.

winnerSaturday: Makeover Finale and America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred

The Finale takes place all day Saturday in the Covered Arena, with the top five riders from each discipline’s preliminary round returning.

Each discipline competes separately in Finale, and each has their own final test to determine the Makeover Champion in that discipline.

The crowd favorite (determined by text message voting) from among the 10 discipline winners is then crowned America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred and earns a $10,000 check!

MasterClassSunday: Makeover Master Class

Learn what qualities experienced trainers look for in a potential Makeover mount, and how they approach their first few rides in this brand-new demonstration, held on Sunday after the competition has concluded.

We’ll have a small group of experienced trainers, who will select from a group of 2019 Makeover-eligible horses provided by several Thoroughbred rehoming organizations. The trainers will discuss the horses’ conformation, how they move, and how they navigate a jump chute with some small fences. Then the trainers will select the horse they want to work with, and after an acclimation period, will come back and demonstrate how they would approach their first few rides or training sessions.

There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions, and the sessions are free for all to attend. This is a fabulous opportunity to learn from some Makeover veterans, and a must-see if you’re considering doing the Makeover yourself in the future!
