Educational Opportunities

Although the focus of Makeover weekend is always on the competition, this is about much more than ribbons! This is the largest nationwide gathering of off-track Thoroughbred enthusiasts all year, and we take great pride in making it an educational experience.

Panel discussions and seminars take part throughout the weekend, with Sunday set aside for some really amazing mounted clinics for our Makeover competitors (all are free for spectators to audit). Whether you want to learn more about training and caring for OTTBs, try out a new sport, or just hear stories from famous racetrackers, there’s a clinic or panel discussion for you! We hope you’ll take part in some of these opportunities in between watching or participating in the Makeover competition itself.

2017 clinics for Makeover participants included cross-country schooling with Nick Larkin, competition critiques from show jumping judge Richard Lamb and show hunter judge Shania Humphrey, dressage fix-a-test with Jennifer Roth,, field hunters with Tom Mansmann, training with obstacles using Harmony Horsemanship with Lindsey Partridge, Working Ranch 101 with Russell Littlefield, Polo 101 with Justin Powers, and Freestyle 101 with Tik Maynard.

2017 seminars included a discussion of racing life with jockey Rosie Napravnik, an introduction to the Young Event Horse Trainer Certification by the U.S. Eventing Association, saddle-fitting for OTTBs, a trainers’ forum (featuring Tik Maynard, Elisa Wallace, Russell Littlefield, Lindsey Partridge, and Ian Roberts), selecting an OTTB for soundness, GI health and nutrition, and a discussion of the effect of the Makeover on demand for OTTBs.

Check back closer to the competition for announcements of our 2018 panelists and clinicians! To make sure that you stay up-to-date on all the Makeover news, be sure to sign up for our e-mail newsletter.
